God planted Lighthouse Baptist Church in the heart of Russ Bishop before Russ Bishop planted it in Edmond, Oklahoma. After leading a man to Christ who lived in the northwest Oklahoma City/south Edmond area, he recognized the need for a solid independent fundamental Baptist church there. Little did he know, Pastor Sam Davison of Southwest Baptist Church in Oklahoma City was carrying the same burden. In God’s time, he brought these two men together and Lighthouse Baptist Church was born.
When called by God to be a pastor in 1995, Bro. Russ left Oklahoma to attend Baptist Bible Graduate School of Theology in Springfield, Missouri. While there, he read an article in the Baptist Bible Tribune written by Pastor Davison concerning planting churches in America. In his article, Bro. Sam commented on the growth of Oklahoma City to the north and acknowledged the need for a solid, independent fundamental Baptist church in that area. God used this article and other confirmations along the way to change Bro. Russ’ burden into a call on his life to plant Lighthouse Baptist Church.
After completing his seminary training, a five-year internship at Southwest Baptist Church under Pastor Davison’s leadership, and a brief time of raising financial support, the first service of Lighthouse Baptist Church was held on October 1, 2006. The first meeting place was Summit Middle School in south Edmond.
Paul Gentry, currently pastoring the Bible Baptist Church in Mount Vernon, Washington, played an integral part in the planting of the church. He served alongside Bro. Russ for the first seventeen months and was an immeasurable help in the infant stage of the church.
In October 2008, Lighthouse Baptist Church formally organized as an indigenous Baptist church with 70 charter members.
After much prayer and seeking the counsel of Pastor Davison, the church moved to its present location in Edmond in January 2009. God has richly blessed. The church has grown rapidly and plans are underway to build an addition onto the existing building.
God has directed every step of this work and we look forward to what He has in store for the future of Lighthouse Baptist Church of Edmond.
